The role
What a tax senior owns
The tax senior is the first review level on the public-accounting tax track. Associates prepare; the senior reviews — catching the missed adjustment, the wrong entity election, the state filing nobody flagged — and takes responsibility for the return going out the door correctly.
Seniors also run the day-to-day client relationship: chasing the workpapers, answering the questions that do not need a manager, and keeping engagements moving through busy season. It is the level where you stop being handed a task list and start owning a set of clients, usually at three to five years in.
What moves pay
Firm size, market, and specialization
Big 4 and national firms pay a brand premium over regional and local firms at the same title, though the gap narrows once you account for hours and cost of living. Specialization starts to separate seniors from each other — a senior in partnership, international, or SALT work is harder to replace than one on general 1040 and 1120 compliance, and the range reflects it.
Busy season is priced into the number. Two seniors on the same figure can be working very different Februaries, so compare the hours behind the pay before comparing the pay itself. Passing the CPA exam typically lands at or just before this level, and firms usually attach a raise or bonus to it.
The path
The senior-to-manager step
The trajectory is tax associate → tax senior → tax manager → senior manager → partner. The manager step is the largest proportional jump on the track: it is where reviewing returns turns into owning a portfolio, planning work, realization, and the client relationship itself. Seniors usually make it in two to three years.
Not everyone takes it. Tax senior is also a common exit point to industry — a corporate tax seat trades the partner ceiling and the busy-season hours for a steadier year. Choosing between the manager promotion and the exit is the defining decision of this level.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a tax senior make?
- A tax senior estimate is around $90,400 median nationally, with a typical range of $72,400–$118,600+. Big 4 and national firms tend to pay above regional and local firms. This is a modeled estimate, not a BLS-published tax senior wage.
- How many years of experience does a tax senior have?
- Typically three to five. The promotion from tax associate to senior usually comes after two to three busy seasons, once you can review an associate’s work rather than only prepare your own. It varies with firm size and turnover.
- Do you need a CPA to be a tax senior?
- Not strictly, but it is expected by this point. Most firms want the license done — or close to done — at the senior level, because it is effectively required for the manager promotion above. Seniors who stall on the exam usually stall on the ladder too.
- Tax senior vs. tax manager — what is the gap?
- The tax manager estimate is around $129,700 versus $90,400 for a tax senior. The senior reviews the work; the manager owns the portfolio, the technical positions, and the client relationship. Both figures are modeled estimates.
- Tax senior vs. audit senior — who earns more?
- They sit at the same level and pay comparably at most firms. Audit seniors carry a marginally higher modeled premium in our estimates, but the real spread comes from firm, market, and specialization rather than from tax versus audit.
How to read these numbers
National, state, and metro pay comes straight from the federal wage measurement for accountants & auditors — direct and source-backed, not scaled from anything.
Role, experience, CPA-license, and employer figures are modeled on top of that measurement and labeled Estimate — the federal data does not break those out, so we never present them as measurements.
