The role
What a senior accountant owns
The senior accountant owns the close rather than supporting it: preparing financial statements, handling the harder reconciliations and technical entries, and reviewing staff work. It is the first level where judgment and review responsibility genuinely matter.
Seniors are also the main point of contact for external auditors on many engagements, which is why audit-side experience translates well into this seat.
The path
The pivot point of an accounting career
Senior accountant is the fork in the road. From here the track splits toward people leadership (accounting manager, then controller) or toward specialization — technical accounting, systems, SEC reporting, or a move into FP&A.
The CPA license carries real weight at this step. It is not always required to be a senior, but it is frequently expected for the manager promotion above, so seniors without it often find the next step harder to reach.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a senior accountant make?
- A senior accountant estimate is around $85,400 median nationally, with a typical range of $68,400–$112,100+. This is a modeled estimate — BLS reports one wage for accountants and auditors overall, not per level.
- How many years of experience does a senior accountant have?
- Typically three to six years. The promotion from staff to senior usually comes after two to four years of solid close and reconciliation work, though it varies widely by employer size and turnover.
- Do you need a CPA to be a senior accountant?
- Not usually. Plenty of senior accountants are unlicensed. The license becomes far more important for the accounting manager and controller steps above, so it is a common thing to finish at the senior level.
- Senior accountant vs. accounting manager — what is the gap?
- The accounting manager estimate is around $118,800 versus $85,400 for a senior accountant. The manager runs the function and a team; the senior owns the work itself. Both are modeled estimates.
How to read these numbers
National, state, and metro pay comes straight from the federal wage measurement for accountants & auditors — direct and source-backed, not scaled from anything.
Role, experience, CPA-license, and employer figures are modeled on top of that measurement and labeled Estimate — the federal data does not break those out, so we never present them as measurements.
