The role

What an audit manager owns

The audit manager owns engagements end to end: scoping, risk assessment, budget and realization, review of fieldwork, and the relationship with client management and the audit committee. Multiple teams typically run in parallel under one manager.

The shift from senior to manager is a shift from doing the audit to owning it — including the uncomfortable parts, like difficult technical conclusions and conversations about scope and fees.

What moves pay

Firm size, market, and industry niche

Big 4 and national firms pay a brand premium over regional and local firms at the same title, though hours and cost of living absorb part of the gap. Industry specialization matters too — financial services, insurance, and technology audit groups tend to pay above general practice.

The audit manager number reflects public-accounting hours. Comparing it to an industry role at similar pay is usually comparing very different workloads and busy-season expectations.

The path

Partner, or the controller exit

The in-firm trajectory is audit associate → audit senior → audit manager → senior manager → partner, with the senior manager estimate a further step up and partner carrying the highest ceiling.

Audit manager is also one of the strongest exit points in the profession. Managers move into controller, technical accounting, and SEC reporting roles in industry, trading the partner ceiling for materially better hours.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an audit manager make?
An audit manager estimate is around $129,700 median nationally, with a typical range of $103,900–$170,200+. Big 4 and national firms tend to pay above regional and local firms. This is a modeled estimate, not a BLS-published audit manager wage.
Do you need a CPA to be an audit manager?
Effectively yes. The CPA license is a standard requirement at the manager level in audit, because managers carry sign-off and technical responsibility on engagements. It is rare to reach the level without it.
Audit manager vs. senior manager — what is the gap?
The senior manager estimate is around $171,500 versus $129,700 for an audit manager. Senior managers own larger client books and sit directly below partner. Both figures are modeled estimates.
What do audit managers do after public accounting?
Controller, technical accounting, SEC reporting, and internal audit leadership are the most common exits. Audit managers are attractive to industry employers because they have seen many companies close their books, not just one.
