The role
What a controller owns
The controller leads accounting operations: the close, financial reporting, internal controls, payroll, AP/AR, and often compliance and audit coordination. It is the senior technical-accounting role in most companies.
Pay scales sharply with company size and complexity. A controller at a small business and a controller at a large multinational are very different jobs with very different compensation.
The path
From accounting manager to CFO
The common trajectory is senior accountant → accounting manager → controller → VP/Director of Finance → CFO. The CPA license is a strong advantage and frequently expected at the controller level and above.
Controllers who add FP&A, treasury, and strategic-finance experience position themselves best for the CFO seat, which carries the highest ceiling on the industry track.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a controller make?
- A controller estimate is around $163,200 median nationally, with a typical range of $130,700–$214,200+. Larger companies pay more. Modeled estimate pending calibration.
- Do you need a CPA to be a controller?
- It is not always strictly required, but the CPA license is a strong advantage and is frequently preferred or expected for controller roles, especially at larger or audited companies.
- Controller vs. CFO — what is the pay gap?
- CFOs generally out-earn controllers, often substantially, because the CFO owns strategy, capital, and investor relations in addition to accounting. The controller is typically the senior accounting leader reporting up to the CFO.
How to read these numbers
National, state, and metro pay comes straight from the federal wage measurement for accountants & auditors — direct and source-backed, not scaled from anything.
Role, experience, CPA-license, and employer figures are modeled on top of that measurement and labeled Estimate — the federal data does not break those out, so we never present them as measurements.
